Peatland Stability Across Latitude, Temperature, and Drainage: Causes and Effects I

Session Description:
Peatlands represent large terrestrial carbon banks. The majority of global peatlands are found in boreal regions, where low temperatures and saturated soils preserve organic matter. These carbon stores may be lost due to draining and warming. Alternatively, peat deposits exist at subtropical and tropical latitudes, where much warmer temperatures would be expected to promote rapid decomposition and thus inhibit peat accumulation, though recent studies have shown that this might not necessarily be the case. This session will focus on the agents and causes of apparent peat stability, or lack thereof, across moisture, temperature and latitude gradients. Studies focusing on short and long term perspectives on peat carbon dynamics are encouraged.
