Natural Wetlands, Inland Waters, and the Global Methane Cycle: Time to Reconcile Top-Down Atmospheric Estimates and Bottom-Up Biogeochemical Estimates of Methane Emissions II

Session Description:
Natural wetlands are the world's largest source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere; emissions from inland waters have not yet been comprehensively assessed. About 50% of the world's wetlands and lakes are in regions >50˚N that are experiencing amplified warming. Wetland-methane emissions estimated from bottom-up biogeochemical, process, and Earth System models are consistently larger than those derived from top-down inverse models. Moreover, a large suite of bottom-up, biogeochemical studies exhibit large differences in magnitude, distribution and seasonality of emissions due primarily to differences in wetland areas and perhaps due to minimal use of flux observations in model evaluation. This session invites novel investigations aimed at reconciling these long-standing inconsistencies, and filling the gap in lake emissions, by reconciling the bottom-up process view with the top-down atmospheric perspective; reconciling tower, aircraft and satellite observations with process understanding; wetland/lake definitions/characterization and their influence on modeled emissions; balancing model complexity with data availability.
