Deep Mantle Dynamics and Its Surface Expressions III
Session ID#: 31798
Session Description:
Interior planetary dynamics are difficult to probe directly. But fundamental insight can be gathered even from the surface: The geological record, gravity, topography, volcanism, and sea-level all carry traces of past and present dynamics. Complementary insight comes from seismic and geochemical observations, laboratory experiments, and geodynamic modeling. Earth's present-day surface is a snapshot in time that displays the integrated signal of multiple processes that operated at different times with varying intensity and duration. The same is true of other planetary surfaces. Linking such temporal and spatial scales is thus crucial to understanding the thermal and chemical history of the mantle, not only on Earth, but also on other planetary bodies.
This broad session aims to shed light on these spatial and temporal links using multiple and multidisciplinary approaches. We welcome theoretical, numerical, laboratory and observational contributions from all across the fields of geology and geophysics.
