When and Where Does Biology Matter? Identifying Physical and Biological Controls on Organic Matter Fluxes and Fate in Aquatic Ecosystems I

Session Description:
Recent work has highlighted the role of water residence time, storm events, environmental change, and ecosystem metabolism in controlling the magnitude, timing, and location of organic matter processing and ensuing biological contributions to carbon emissions and export in fluvial networks. Despite these recent advances, concomitant measurements of whole-ecosystem processes, organic matter structure/quality, and/or carbon emissions and transport are rare, especially over the multi-season to multi-annual timescales required to fully understand the scope of different controls on carbon fluxes and fate. We invite submissions that aim to further our understanding of when/where biology matters in ecosystem/catchment organic matter dynamics, linked carbon and nutrient cycles, consequences of organic matter processing for larger-scale carbon budgets, broader implications for downstream ecology and water quality, and/or other related topics.
