History and Evolution of the Lowermost Mantle: Constraints from Multiple Disciplines II

Session Description:
The Earth's lowermost mantle poses many questions whose answers are critical for understanding Earth history and dynamics.Some outstanding problems include: the origin and makeup of the large low-shear-velocity provinces (LLSVPs) and ultra-low-velocity zones (ULVZs); the presence of phase transitions and effect of elemental disproportionation or fractionation; the extent of any chemical or dynamic interaction with the outer core; its behavior as a boundary layer and potential control on mantle convection, and as a possible source of deep mantle plume; and the presence of subducted materials. Addressing these questions requires synergies of multiple disciplines.The focus of this session is on better constraining the structure, composition and dynamics of the lowermost mantle to understand Earth evolution and dynamics. We call for observational, modeling, and experimental contributions in all disciplines, including but not limited to seismology, mineral physics, geochemistry, and geodynamics.
