Novel Insights into Organic Matter Sources, Pathways, and Fate in Groundwater and Surface Waters II

Session Description:
The source, transformation and fate of organic matter in aquatic systems forms a fundamental part of the global carbon cycle. Despite this, knowledge gaps remain in key areas such as the processes determining groundwater organic matter concentration and composition, and large watershed scale river studies have only recently been attempted, assessing the role of fluvial networks as organic matter processors. Novel analytical techniques such as ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry, high temporal resolution optical studies, and applications of stable and radiocarbon isotopes are providing new understanding of the transformations (e.g. biological and photochemical) of organic matter at temporally relevant time scales. This session seeks submissions that focus on understudied segments of organic matter cycling in aquatic systems, e.g. groundwater dissolved organic matter, and groundwater-river interactions, delineating the composition of organic matter in relation to land cover, and also studies utilizing novel technologies for the characterisation of organic matter.
