Session Description:
Geophysical methods used in hydrogeophysics and near surface geophysics have great potential for characterizing the critical zone properties and processes to inform hydrological and biogeochemical studies. However, geophysical methods only provide indirect information about subsurface properties and processes of interest (subsurface flow, transport, biogeochemical reactions). The link between geophysical properties (e.g. electrical conductivity) and variables of interest (e.g. water content) requires understanding of petrophysical relationships and coupled fluid flow and biochemical reactions. The increasing use of geophysics for mapping complex environments and time-lapse monitoring necessitates that these relationships be accurate such that geophysical data can be correctly interpreted and/or included in fully coupled inversions. Establishing petrophysical relationships is inherently multidisciplinary as such models are influenced by pore-scale physical properties and interfacial biogeochemical processes, often requiring upscaling. This session seeks theoretical developments, laboratory studies, and field studies that demonstrate the correct use of petrophysical relationships for hydrogeophysical and near surface applications.
