Natural and Anthropogenic Cycles of Technology-Critical Elements: Geologic Sources and Environmental Impacts II

Session Description:
New energy, transportation, and communication technologies have increased our reliance on a wide range of critical elements with unique properties, including rare earths, platinum group elements, Li, Nb, Ta, Ga, In, Ge, Te and others. Global mining of these elements is limited. Some are produced as primary commodities whereas others are byproducts of other commodities. Development of new sources and improved recovery approaches requires an improved understanding of the geologic sources of these elements and their natural and anthropogenic cycling, including nanoparticulate forms, advancements in analytical methods, and greater knowledge of potential ecosystem impacts as environmental fluxes of these emerging contaminants increase due to human activities. We invite abstracts describing studies of natural and anthropogenic fluxes of technology-critical elements, including development of new sources, reactivity and mobility in different environmental compartments, analytical challenges, and influences on biota. Field, laboratory and computational studies are welcome.
