Gravity Waves in the Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, and Ionosphere I

Session Description:
Atmospheric gravity waves(GWs) are important to the stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and ionosphere (SMTI), because they transport significant momentum and energy, create variability, saturate/dissipate, and create traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs). These processes can alter the dynamics and characteristics regionally and globally, and can result in secondary GWs that transfer momentum and energy to higher altitudes and other regions. Abstracts are solicited on the modeling and observational topics at all latitudes ranging from (a) GW excitation by sources in the lower, middle and upper atmosphere, including deep convection, orography, body forces, wave breaking, and geostrophic adjustment, (b) propagation, dissipation, and breaking of GWs in the middle and upper atmosphere, c) TIDs created by GWs, (d) GW effects on the regional flow and global circulation, and (e) interactions of GWs with planetary waves and tides.
