At the Edge of Planetary Geodesy I

Session Description:
The Geodesy of Solar System bodies consists of modeling and measuring their shape, topography, and gravity field including variations in their rotation and orientation. Geodetic investigations are involved in many spacecraft missions and provide information on the internal structure of planets, satellites, asteroids and comets.

The heart of geodetic measurements is precise positioning of spacecraft orbiting these bodies or landers at their surface. The accuracy of this positioning is currently the main limitation of the internal mass distribution derived from these measurements. New instrumentations and innovative ideas of mission design are thus required to enhance the scientific return of geodetic experiments.

This session aims to present state-of-the-art results of planetary geodesy while assessing how much the positioning accuracy could be improved by applying new ideas and concepts under preparation or design.

Contributions from the most recent, on-going and future missions around telluric and giant planets including their moons are welcome.
