Nature and Evolution of Climate and Water on Early Mars I

Session Description:
Major outstanding questions in the study of ancient Mars and its potential habitability include the abundance of water (oceans?); its distribution and state (liquid or solid); the manner in which impact, volcanic and spin-axis/orbital processes redistributed/sequestered water; the nature of the cryosphere and the role of groundwater; and the provenance of diverse water-related mineralogies. These questions are all related to the nature of the climate in early Mars history (Noachian). New perspectives from surface exploration of ancient playas and lakes by Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity, remote sensing of clays and their geologic context, new assessments of water and atmospheric abundances by MAVEN, as well as refined atmospheric general circulation models all offer new insights into the conundrum of whether ancient Mars was “warm and wet” or “cold and icy”. Contributions are invited that bring new perspectives to the fundamental question of the nature and evolution of climate on Early Mars.
