Session Description:
Soil science is a mature field on Earth. However, it remains an emerging discipline elsewhere, despite ad-hoc use of pedological terms in planetary literature. Furthermore, soils at extreme climate locales on Earth can provide geochemical analogs to unconsolidated sediment on Mars. Human explorers will invariably encounter martian soil, also as the most accessible in situ resource. Analyses of soil processes on Mars at in situ and regional scales highlight the need for a consistent system of understanding extraterrestrial soil. This includes assessing the extent to which terrestrial soil processes may also arise on planetary surfaces. We welcome examining these topics to take us forward in the exploration of soil as a key repository of geologic process at the interface between planetary crusts and atmospheres. We also welcome abstracts examining how soil archives the record of weathering, atmospheric processes, and volcanic exhalations over geologic time.
