Session Description:
The dynamics of the magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere system is strongly driven by magnetopause reconnection. Transient reconnection gives rise to flow channels, waves, instabilities, and turbulence phenomena that cascades to efficient heating of the thermosphere-ionosphere system. Coordinated observations, theory and modelling of multi-scale physics are needed to decode the complexity of the MIT system dynamics. We highlight the importance of transient and localized processes for the IT system, understanding their contribution to the energy budget, together with advanced data assimilation, and improvement of upper boundary driving of Global Circulation Models. This is needed to develop a proper physical description of the ionosphere-thermosphere system response to transient reconnection, including space weather phenomena such as radio waves, mesoscale flows, scintillations, ion upwelling and satellite drag. This session focuses on all aspects of high-latitude dynamics, including micro- and macro-scale physics, field-aligned currents and flow dynamics, generation of waves, instabilities, thermospheric heating and cooling, and scintillation phenomena.
