Seasonal Sea Ice and Snow: Monitoring and Modeling of Processes and Properties from Grains to Global Models II Posters

Session Description:
Arctic sea ice has declined in both thickness and extent and is shifting toward a seasonal ice regime. In the process, the physical properties and morphology of the ice pack are changing in ways that we do not fully understand. At the same time, Antarctic sea ice has undergone modest changes in thickness and extent while exhibiting high interannual variability. Also the depth distribution and physical properties of snow are expected to change with strong impacts on the atmosphere-ice-ocean interaction. Major challenges in sea ice and snow research are their high spatial and temporal variability and complex vertical structure. Advancing knowledge of these processes and properties is critical for improving the realism and predictive skill of sea ice models. This session examines processes, interactions and feedbacks in seasonally frozen oceans, ranging from 1D micro scales to global circulation models.
