Subduction Zone Structure and Interplate Slip Along the Pacific Margin of South America I

Session Description:
Many subduction-related parameters, such as incoming plate age, roughness, and sediment thickness, thought to control earthquake generation and slip behavior are found along the ~6500-km long Nazca/South America plate boundary, making this margin a natural laboratory for comparative studies. Furthermore, there is a rich historic record of earthquake activity extending back to ~1500 AD, with 9 earthquakes of Mw≥7.6 since 2000 that have been well recorded by modern seismological and geodetic instrumentation. This enables detailed studies of the relationship between Earth structure, seismic and aseismic slip, and earthquake nucleation, propagation and segmentation. We invite contributions from the broad range of disciplines that contribute to understanding earthquake processes along the Pacific margin of South America, including studies related to the Mw7.8 2016 Ecuador earthquake, recent controlled-source experiments along the Chilean margin, and advances in geodetic monitoring of the subduction zone.
