Cassini Science Highlights of Saturn’s Magnetosphere During the Grand Finale and Ring-Grazing Orbits I

Session Description:
In September 2017, the Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn will end in a dramatic plunge into Saturn’s atmosphere. Science observations are planned until the final loss of contact with the spacecraft. Preceding this, Cassini will execute a series of twenty-two unique highly inclined “Grand Finale” orbits with closest approach just over Saturn’s cloud tops. Prior to the Grand Finale, Cassini’s trajectory will pass through the unexplored region at the outer edge of the main rings in a series of 20 highly-inclined “Ring Grazing” orbits. Planned observations include measurements of Saturn’s unusual magnetic field from the closest-ever vantage point, close views of Saturn’s aurora and sampling of field lines coupled to them, measurements in regions where Saturn’s intense kilometric radio emission (SKR) is thought to originate, in-situ sampling of the dust environment and inner magnetosphere near the F-ring. This session will focus on magnetospheric observations made during these unique mission phases.
