Multiscale Investigations of Fundamental Plasma Processes by in Situ Observations and Simulations I

Session Description:
The Cluster mission has emphasized multi-scale processes occurring throughout the Earth’s magnetosphere since 2000. The MMS mission, launched in 2015, has revealed, in particular, the electron-scale processes with unprecedented time-resolution measurements. The Cluster and MMS, constituting two tetrahedral configurations with varying inter-spacecraft separations and different orbital inclinations, have provided us with an opportunity to capture a micro-to-macroscopic picture of fundamental plasma processes. These multi-scale phenomena occurring in the near-Earth space include velocity-shear-driven vortex and wave, turbulence, and magnetic reconnection. In-situ observations from MMS and/or Cluster enable quantitative testing of micro and meso-scale physics predicted by theory/simulations. This session addresses details of our current knowledge on multi-scale physical processes using MMS and/or Cluster data, modeling, or both. Studies including conjunctions between these and other missions, such as THEMIS, Van Allen Probes, Arase (ERG) and Geotail are also encouraged.
