Atmospheric Air Pollution and Public Health: Why Urban Aerosols Are So Toxic? I

Session Description:
The urban air pollution situation in many Asian and South-American cities is getting increasingly critical. Despite stringent clear air pollution legislation, even in US or European cities such as in Paris, France or Bakersfield, USA the rate of dangerous air pollution episodes is still very high and partially further increasing. On the one hand, the knowledge on specific causes of the air-pollution related-health effects and the underlying environmental and atmospheric processes such as aging of emissions, formation of secondary aerosols etc. is incomplete. On the other hand, epidemiological studies clearly prove the large impact of air pollution onto public health. In this interdisciplinary session environmental-, climate- and atmospherics-scientists, biologists and health effect researchers, analytical chemists and air pollution experts shall discuss the toxicological causes and the influence of climate, weather, emission-types and -mixtures onto the adverse health effects of air pollution. Furthermore intelligent abatement and monitoring strategies will be covered.
