The Joint Polar Satellite System: Providing New Data and Product Applications for Better Global Earth Observation II

Session Description:
Building on the success of Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP), the Joint Polar Satellite System-1 is being prepared for a September 2017 launch. The suite of state-of-the-art instruments forming the JPSS baseline are: an advanced microwave sounder and an infrared sounder both providing data for assimilation into forecast models which are critical for weather forecasting out to 7 days in advance; a leading-edge visible and infrared imager needed for environmental assessments such as snow/ice cover, droughts, volcanic ash, forest fires and surface temperature; and an ozone sensor primarily used for global monitoring of ozone and input to weather and climate models. These JPSS sensors provide vital continuity to polar sensor products that are a cornerstone to national and local decision-makers.

We seek abstracts that emphasize how the capabilities of the JPSS instruments improve the observational quality of the data or describe the improved environmental applications and societal benefits of JPSS.
