Subsidence: Causes, Impacts, Mapping, and Ground/Satellite Monitoring I

Session Description:
Human activities lead to Earth’s surface deformation in sedimentary geology or karst landscape areas. Oil and gas extraction activities influence the effective pore pressure and can cause hydraulic fracturing, micro-seismicity, and earthquakes. Local and large scale surface (sinkholes and subsidence) deformation related to underground processes occur either suddenly or as a gradual process in many parts of the world. The recent multi-year drought conditions in Central Valley, California, has resulted in both developments of new and growing large and small scale existing subsidence features. The proposed session invites oral and poster presentations covering subsidence related to geology, geophysical environments, mining, hydrology, changes in groundwater level and pore pressure, fracking/fluid injection, induced seismicity, and long-term drought. Methods can include geophysical techniques including GPS, borehole sensors, ground penetrating and airborne radar, and satellite sensors for monitoring of small and large scale deformations (sinkhole and subsidence). Modeling and prediction will also be discussed.
