Southern Hemisphere Westerly Wind Dynamics and Impacts on Terrestrial and Marine Environments: Paleo and Modern Perspectives I

Session Description:
Subantarctic islands are uniquely positioned at the Southern Hemisphere’s ocean and atmospheric frontal boundaries, which play a fundamental role in global climate change. These remote islands support fascinating endemic terrestrial and aquatic habitats that experience rapid ecosystem change as fronts migrate north and south with changing climate. Further, the region is directly influenced by the westerly winds, which drive circulation and air-sea gas exchange in the mid- to high latitude Southern Ocean. These islands are excellent monitors of Earth system change over a variety of time scales. However, we have yet to achieve a holistic understanding of how ocean-atmosphere processes originating at higher and lower latitudes influence the islands’ marine and terrestrial ecosystems. We invite abstracts that take a multi-disciplinary approach to evaluate climate, ocean, ecosystem or environmental change in all sectors of the subantarctic.
