Chronostratigraphic Advances Integrating Paleomagnetism, Tephra, Climate Correlation, and Other Stratigraphic and Proxy Methods to Solve Earth System Processes and Events I

Session Description:
The temporal/geographic context for geologic events is dependent on understanding the capabilities and limitations of chronostratigraphic methods.  We highlight recent advances in chronostratigraphy with examples from two time intervals: the radiocarbon era (0-50ka) and the Late Triassic through Early Jurassic.  The last 50ka spans abrupt environmental changes and periods warmer/colder than preindustrial times. However, in many archives, the exact timing of paleoenvironmental events is uncertain due to the availability of radiocarbon-datable materials, variability in reservoir ages, and other complications.  The Late Triassic through Early Jurassic witnessed seminal biotic, climatic, and tectonic events against a backdrop of generally elevated CO2, conjoined continents, and nascent modern ecosystems. Recent drilling campaigns and field expeditions are providing highly temporally resolved records that provide a spatially extensive context for environmental change.  In both cases, integrating diverse stratigraphic methods can address uncertainties and offer the temporal framework ultimately needed to provide context for the modern world.
