Paleoperspectives on Circulation, Winds, and Nutrients: Examples from the Pacific and Indian Oceans I

Session Description:
While the North Pacific Ocean comprises a significant fraction of the global ocean volume, its paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic history is poorly constrained relative to other ocean basins. As the “end of the line” for thermohaline circulation, deep North Pacific bottom waters can be corrosive to foraminiferal carbonate, and paleoceanographic investigations in this region have previously suffered from difficulties generating age models via foraminiferal stable isotope stratigraphy. Recent coring efforts targeting bathymetric highs have acquired new sedimentary archives that hold promise for reconstructing the role of this ocean basin in past climate changes over the Plio-Pleistocene. We welcome contributions exploring millennial- to orbital-scale climatic, oceanographic, and biogeochemical variability using proxy records, including terrestrial and marine archives. We also welcome contributions that use climate models and model-data comparisons to explore the causes and consequences of variability in the North Pacific and their effects on the global climate.
