Regional Groundwater Quality, Availability, and Sustainability: Advances, Methods, and Approaches for a Complex, Changing World I

Session Description:
The joint occurrence of population growth, agriculture expansion, climate uncertainties, and unsustainable water use have led to the degradation of groundwater quantity and quality and ecological impacts. Understanding the long-term impacts of human water use and contaminant release on groundwater quality, as well as variable climate conditions, is important for future water resources management. The challenges of conducting studies of groundwater quality, availability and sustainability can vary because of social, political and regulatory differences, and accessibility to data and analytical tools. This session seeks contributions that present new advances in monitoring and modeling for assess the impact of spatiotemporally variable climate conditions, anthropogenic pressure, as well as political settings on regional groundwater quality, availability, and sustainability. We highly welcome presentations developing new advances, methods, and approaches for quantifying regional groundwater systems in diverse climatic, hydrologic, social, and political settings, including regional flow and transport models.
