Session Description:
Hydrological models support a variety of research applications, including integrated assessment modeling, and nexus between water, energy, and food. A major challenge in developing models is correct representation of human interventions to the water cycle. Water storage plays a key role in the terrestrial hydrosystem, linking incoming water from precipitation to its release as runoff or evapotranspiration. Basin storage can be highly sensitive to changes in climate, land use/cover change and anthropogenic activity. Current challenges in storage studies include improving the measurement, modelling and theoretical understanding of rainfall-storage-release interactions and their response to human interventions. This session includes contributions on monitoring, modeling and hypothesis testing on: a) past, present and future projections in basin storage, b) modeling storage effects on the partition of precipitation, c) theoretical developments on storage and runoff sensitivity, d) exploring the feedbacks between anthropogenic activity and storage dynamics.
