Using the Satellite Microwave Radiometer Record for Climate Analyses: Past, Present, and the Future Looming Observation Gap I

Session Description:
Since 1978, the scientific community has derived enormous benefit from satellite-borne passive microwave observations; derived records include the dramatic recent declining Arctic sea ice extent. Newly-processed NASA MEaSUREs Calibrated Enhanced-Resolution Brightness Temperature (CETB) ESDR data provide gridded enhanced-resolution (up to 3.125 km) passive microwave data, in addition to conventional 25-km grids, and include all data from each instrument, providing extensive periods of overlap. The CETB data will enable improved insights into the historical records of derived geophysical variables. This climate record is threatened – current satellites carrying microwave radiometers have no planned successors, and all are beyond their design life. New U.S., European and Japanese radiometers will not launch before 2022, and data from existing Chinese and Russian satellites have not been evaluated. This session will explore potential applications of CETB data, as well as options for addressing the threat to the continuity of passive microwave observations.
