Hydroclimatic Extremes: Drought II

Session Description:
Drought is among the most costly natural hazards in the U.S. and around the world, and its recovery (e.g. in California in 2016/17) can be both disruptive and complex. Understanding the hydroclimatic causes, frequency and severity of drought development and recovery, and producing reliable predictions of these are critically important for impact assessments, disaster mitigation, and future projection. This session invites contributions from all aspects of monitoring, diagnostics, prediction, and projection of drought, including (1) understanding the physical mechanism and manifestation of drought occurrence, and propagation and termination of events, (2) estimation of frequency, spatial patterns, and intra-seasonal to inter-annual variability, (3) probabilistic and deterministic modeling and forecasting, (4) predictability of dynamic models and statistical methods in detection, (5) impacts of climate, landscape, and demand projections on the severity and frequency of future episodes, (6) indicators and assessment frameworks, and (7) diagnosis and attribution of events.
