MR43A:
Carbon and Other Volatiles in Earth and Planetary Interiors I Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 34558
Session Description:
Carbon, one of the most abundant elements in the universe, together with other volatile elements (e.g., H, N, S, and halogens) plays a major role in magma generation, redox, ascent, and eruption, and their volcanic emission influences a wide range of global environmental processes. The presence of volatiles within planetary interiors profoundly impacts physical properties of magmas and minerals including conductivity, rheology, and diffusion kinetics. The storage and cycling of these volatiles in planetary interiors depends on the stability of volatile(s)-bearing minerals and melts at high pressure and temperature. In particular, deep-mantle diamonds and their inclusions provide key information about the mineralogy of deep reservoirs and the deep volatiles cycle through geological time. This session aims to unite researchers from the fields of geochemistry, geophysics, petrology, rock mechanics, mineral physics, and theoretical simulations, addressing our understanding of the physical and chemical behavior of volatiles at extreme conditions.
