Session Description:
Heterogeneous solid/fluid and fluid/fluid interfaces in porous media influence complexities of fluid flow and changes in formation properties. Large uncertainties remain in understanding the processes that occur at these interfaces, the evolution of the pore structure, and the impact on fluid flow, transport and formation properties. Interfaces may facilitate biogeochemical processes, and evolve as a result of such processes and the corresponding reactive transport dynamics. Processes such as microbial growth, mineral precipitation and dissolution at interfaces inevitably change porous media geometry and field scale hydrodynamics. Complex fluids including supercritical fluids, suspensions and foams, may further complicate systems and introduce new uncertainties in understanding multi-phase interactions and reactions. This session welcomes experimental, numerical, and theoretical investigations that advance understanding of interfacial processes in porous media on all scales. We especially welcome submissions on precipitation and dissolution, wettability, multi-phase fluid systems, microbe-mineral interactions, mineral-fluid interactions, and investigations coupling approaches with reactive transport.
