Recent Advances in Understanding Deformation Microstructures II

Session Description:
Deformation microstructures (e.g., grain shapes, sizes and alignments; cracks and fractures; grain-boundary and porosity structures; crystallographic preferred orientations and misorientations) give crucial insights into the underlying processes and conditions of brittle failure and ductile flow in the Earth’s lithosphere. Through extensive optical and electron microscope studies over the past few decades, microstructures have become an indispensable tool in unravelling deformation histories, kinematics and conditions, in faults, shear zones and ice sheets. We welcome presentations that describe new methods for characterizing deformation microstructures, and that give fresh insight into how microstructures develop and evolve through time, reflect deformation conditions, and influence large-scale geodynamic processes. In addition to contributions utilizing conventional analytical methods (e.g., electron backscatter diffraction, transmission electron microscopy), we encourage submissions that use emerging techniques such as transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD), high-resolution EBSD, cryo-EBSD, atom probe tomography (APT), and synchrotron x-ray microtomography.
