Advances in the Science of Radioactive Waste Cleanup and Disposal I

Session Description:
Cleanup and permanent disposal of radioactive waste is an urgent global problem and represents a significant science and engineering challenge. Ensuring waste isolation involves multi-scale, coupled processes, as well as predicting fate and transport over extremely long timescales. Both the cleanup of contaminated geosystems, and the permanent geologic disposal of radioactive waste require synthesis of a wide range of hydrological, geological, and geochemical observations using advanced numerical modeling tools. We invite a wide range of submissions on laboratory, field, theoretical, or modeling studies. Relevant topics could include, but are not limited to: characterization of contaminated hydrological systems, modeling of long-term repository system performance, laboratory investigations into relevant geochemical and/or geomechanical processes, comparative studies of natural analogues to disposal systems, and prediction of behavior in coupled thermal-hydrological-mechanical-chemical waste disposal systems.
