From Mantle Plumes to Ocean Plumes: Mapping Heat Transfer from Mantle to Ocean

Session Description:
Mid-ocean ridges represent a window on mantle processes and a heat source for the oceans. Near active mid-ocean ridges, hydrothermally induced fluid flow drives heat and mass exchange between the crust and ocean. This flow, which warms the ocean bottom boundary layer and cools the crust and upper mantle, impacts ocean circulation, evolution of the lithosphere, deep-sea ecological communities, and ultimately climate. Recent modelling studies and data from interdisciplinary surveys and longer-term observatories enable a systems approach to further the understanding of this exchange process.


We bring together members of the solid earth and ocean research communities to discuss interactions between the mantle, the crust and the oceans, focusing on the mid-ocean ridge and its flanks, through a holistic interdisciplinary approach. Presentations will explore these interactions and the wider implications to understanding of ocean circulation, mantle dynamics and lithosphere evolution.
