Session Description:
| This session provides an opportunity to present experimental and numerical activities that tackle cross-cutting subsurface energy challenges. With cross-cutting challenges, we mean those that are similarly associated with a variety of subsurface energy applications, such as CO2 sequestration, unconventional hydrocarbon extraction, enhanced geothermal systems, nuclear waste disposal, and subsurface energy storage. The behavior of these systems is controlled by coupled processes (thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical-biological) that cannot be viewed in isolation and may span multiple length (nm-km) and temporal (nanosecond-thousands of years) scales. Capturing these multi-scale, multi-physics interplays is challenging both numerically and experimentally. The session provides a forum for researchers to exchange ideas on advancing the state-of-the-art in coupled-processes understanding, from theory and predictive simulation to laboratory and field observations. A particular focus of this session are experimental activities in dedicated subsurface field facilities that allow for focused in situ studies under controlled conditions at well-characterized locations. |
