Ecohydrological, Hydropedological, and Hydrometeorological Insights from Spatiotemporal Patterns II

Session Description:
Much of what we know about ecohydrological and critical-zone processes is derived from observing temporal patterns at the scale of the ped, plant, plot or catchment. However, examining spatial patterns provides an alternate means of inferring processes because spatial variation is rarely a function of random error, but instead a product of site characteristics. By considering space (both laterally and vertically), time, and the interaction of the two, we can significantly advance our understanding of the processes that control the movement of water and the shaping of the critical zone. Interpreting spatiotemporal patterns and determining process generality also provides insight into emergent hydrologic behavior at greater spatial and temporal scales. The objective of this session is to gather research that advances ecological, hydrological, and critical zone knowledge by connecting spatiotemporal patterns to process, using models and/or observations. We especially encourage exploratory analyses that yield new perspectives.
