Facilitating Interdisciplinary Geosciences by Limiting Data Friction: Approaches and Outcomes II

Session Description:
Interdisciplinary geoscientific research is increasingly tasked to answer critical questions within and across Earth systems science. While research activities within a discipline follow well established data norms and often rely on a single, well understood data repository or network, interdisciplinary researchers face challenges in discovering data, tackling issues of data friction within workflows, and challenges in depositing derived data in appropriate repositories.


To move interdisciplinary geosciences forward, we must examine the ways in which research that crosses disciplines encounters data friction, and the ways that efforts to resolve this data friction have resulted in novel research results. The session seeks examples of standards development, utilization or best practices that have been spurred by interdisciplinary collaboration, and examples of data science platforms that facilitate discovery, interpretation, and re-use of data across disciplines. This session will showcase interoperability solutions, invite use cases and lessons learned, and identify unmet needs.
