Geomagnetic Field Behavior Across All Timescales: Data, Methods, and Applications I
Session ID#: 34997
Session Description:
Unraveling past geomagnetic field changes is crucial not only to understand the geodynamo but also to investigate their influence on cosmogenic radionuclide production and climate. Direct measurements from satellites and geophysical observatories describe the spatial and temporal evolution of the geomagnetic field over the last centuries with high-resolution. In addition, paleomagnetic data obtained from volcanic rocks, sediments and archeological materials are used to investigate the time-varying behavior of the ancient geomagnetic field. However, the nature and origin of geomagnetic field fluctuations during the Holocene are still poorly understood. In this session we invite contributions that deal with the past variation of the geomagnetic field. We welcome contributions ranging from paleomagnetic data acquisition (directions and/or intensities) to geomagnetic field reconstructions both at local and global scales. This session may also provide space for results presenting new or revisited applications of paleomagnetism in other areas such as geochronological or climatic studies.
