Munitions in Underwater Environments I

Session Description:
It is estimated that nearly 10 million acres spread across over 300 sites of underwater environments in the U.S. and surrounding territories are contaminated with unexploded ordnance (UXO) or munitions. Advanced technologies, detailed observations, and coupled models are required for long-term remediation and management at sites in the U.S and around the world. We seek contributions from a broad range of topics with the common theme of munitions in underwater environments including but not limited to (1) both acoustic and electromagnetic sensor development, testing, validation, and modeling for detection and classification of UXO; (2) observations of munitions mobility and burial; (3) deployment of so-called, smart munitions, containing onboard sensors; (4) modeling of munitions mobility, burial, and the environment from storm event to decadal time scales.
