Seafloor Mapping: Progress, Discoveries, Innovations, and Collaborations V

Session Description:
The world’s oceans are largely unexplored, with less than 10% of the entire seafloor mapped at high resolution. The need for more and better mapping of the seafloor, with particular focus on bathymetry, geology and habitat, is necessary to identify marine resources, assess geologic hazards, characterize biodiverse and vulnerable environments, create baselines for monitoring change, and generate knowledge to inform policy. Recent seafloor mapping progress has been achieved through regional and national seabed mapping programs and international collaboration. These efforts are leading to significant geologic insight while enabling the development of international standards and products that will contribute to seamless global coverage. This session will (1) review progress on global seafloor mapping; (2) focus on recent geologic discoveries; (3) present the most recent developments in methods, standards and products; and (4) provide a forum to share expertise and both enable and promote further collaborations
