Session Description:
Geomorphological systems have been increasingly analyzed as complex systems. Elements of these systems contributing to their complexity include networks, connectivity, and self-organization. Channel networks are ubiquitous in nature, occur at multiple scales, and serve as the major pathways through which material is conveyed through landscapes. The structure and dynamics of networks and connectivity between different geomorphic features provides insight into material fluxes and exchanges. While autogenic processes and self-organization have become widely recognized, linking these observations to physical processes has been limited and thus the implications of self-organization have remained under-utilized. This session aims to bring together researchers working across disparate geomorphic systems to discuss approaches and insights on the complexity of these systems. This session invites presentations on quantifying aspects of channel-network structure (e.g., topology, geometry); connectivity (including floodplain connectivity); process dynamics on or of the network related to sediment or biogeochemical cycling; and autogenic processes and self-organization.
