Session ID#: 35311
Session Description:
Perturbations associated with global change (e.g., shifts in temperature, precipitation, vegetation) may cause linear, non-linear, or threshold changes in terrestrial C stocks, and are conceptualized and modeled in a variety of ways. However, soil carbon (C) dynamics remain a significant source of uncertainty in C cycle models and climate projections, in part from an incomplete understanding and representation of processes controlled by microorganisms, the stabilizing capacity of soil minerals and the interaction of these two drivers. In this session, we explore how our current approach to experiments and models are incorporating these stabilization and destabilization processes at multiple scales, including both the activity of microbes as both mediators and as secondary sources (via their necromass) of SOM. We particularly encourage submissions that employ novel approaches (i.e., molecular, stoichiometric) or utilize gradients to spark larger-scale perspectives on soil C dynamics and the consequences for ecosystem-scale C cycling.
