Session Description:
The study of rivers has undergone a methodological revolution through remote sensing and novel in-situ measurement techniques making it possible to study the morphology and ecology of river systems at broad ranges of spatial and temporal scales. At local scales, ground-based and airborne tools are allowing unprecedented analysis of fine detail and at the global scale, decades of satellite imagery is facilitating new comprehension of large-scale variability in river systems. The application of remote sensing to river systems is already generating detailed understanding of the links between fluvial processes and ecosystems dynamics. This session will be a forum to discuss the remote sensing of rivers, addressing methodological advances, innovative applications in fluvial environments, new instrumentation (including in-situ measurements), or ways remote sensing can enhance our conceptual and theoretical understanding of rivers. We are particularly interested in abstracts that highlight the use of remote sensing across multiple spatial and/or temporal scales.
