Session Description:
We make observations of the Earth’s surface in many ways, including in situ field surveys, streamgages, ocean buoys, and numerous ground-based systems, airborne and satellite remote sensing platforms. In biogeosciences, the response of terrestrial vegetation to climate change is an active area of research, and includes changes in species distributions, phenology, physiology, and carbon, water, and energy cycling. While remote sensing provides important descriptions of vegetation state and dynamics, it is also a key dataset in environmental and ecological analyses of plant-climate interactions. This session will provide an overview of the current landscape of U.S. EO usage, user needs for future EO systems, and the future of commercial remote sensing. This session will highlight applications that seek to utilize terrestrial remote sensing observations as primary datasets in analyses of plant-climate interactions.
