Session Description:
Sorting of particles by size, density and other properties plays a significant role in earth and planetary surface processes. As consituents unmix, they influence other dynamics from transport rates to average and extreme stresses. For example: Sorting of a wide range of grain sizes results in patterns such as armoring, gravel patch formation, and downstream fining and modifies bedload and suspension fluxes; Sorting in a debris flow gives rise to a well-known coarsening of the front or snout, affecting bed erosion and other geomorphological effects and hazards; Sorting of particles also plays a role in hazards associated with snow avalanches, pyroclastic flows, rock avalanches, and other geophysical flows. This session involves experimental, theoretical, numerical and field-based contributions on grain sorting behaviors and their influence on earth surface processes. Research is most welcomed at different scales, from the grain to the basin and within different environments, including coasts, estuaries, rivers, mountains....
