EP11E:
Toward a Step Change in Understanding of Sedimentary Processes in the Deep Sea I
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 35627
Session Description:
Submarine turbidity currents are the volumetrically most important process for transporting sediment across our planet, and form its largest sediment accumulations, whilst geostrophic contour currents drive ocean circulation. These deep-sea flows thus have unusually widespread implications for transfer and burial of organic carbon, functioning and diversity of benthic ecosystem, geohazards to seabed pipelines and cables, deposition of oil and gas reservoirs, and reading geological archives of Earth climate and history. It can be particularly challenging to study active processes in the deep-sea, which ensures that key questions remain. Turbidity currents have been especially difficult to monitor directly. Here we show how recent work used new technology and methods to monitor turbidity currents in action, in unprecedented detail. This session thus seeks to make a step change in understanding of deep-sea flows through studies that combine direct monitoring, morphodynamics, numerical modelling, physical experiments, and studies of deep-sea deposits at different scales.
