Using New Data and Technology to Better Understand Freshwater and Lake Systems: End-to-End Remote Sensing & Regional Modeling Approaches.

Session Description:
Freshwater systems are under increasing pressure due to more frequent occurrences of extreme weather events as a result of climate change and human exploitation of land, terrestrial, and watershed resources. Furthermore, inland waters in these systems modify regional weather and climate and have exhibited notable changes that will continue to impact people (e.g., increasing lake surface temperatures, increasing occurrences of harmful algal blooms, declining lake ice cover) but climate models often do not include a realistic representation of these systems. New data and technology is allowing for more sophisticated analysis and understanding of these complex systems – remote sensing satellites capable of precisely measuring water quality and regional modeling efforts aiming to more accurately represent the lake-land-atmosphere system. This session provides a forum to highlight ongoing research in these areas and to bring together experts in hydrology, aquatic remote sensing, and climate modeling.
