Partial Melting During High-Grade Metamorphism: Implications for Orogenic Systems I

Session Description:
During orogenesis, deep crustal rocks commonly reach pressure–temperature conditions sufficient for partial melting to occur, either during burial or exhumation. The presence of melt has major rheologic implications for mountain building, as it changes the viscosity, density, and how strain is partitioned during orogenesis. In addition, melt extraction and magma emplacement contribute to crustal differentiation and stabilization over geologic time. These combined processes may also drive the collapse and exhumation of orogenic belts, and aid in exhuming (ultra)high-pressure terranes. This session seeks contributions that investigate the quantity, timing, and/or conditions at which partial melting occurs in different geodynamic environments, and the implications that anatexis has on the evolution of orogenic belts and subducted crustal material. We encourage abstracts that use a variety of techniques, such as field mapping, phase equilibria modeling, petrochronology, geochemistry, and geodynamic and/or geophysical modeling.
