Session Description:
Alkaline rocks and carbonatites host some of the world’s richest resources of critical metals (e.g. REE, HFSE, P) and are the products of highly fractionated and/or low degree partial melts. The rarity of active igneous systems has largely limited studies to exhumed fossil intrusions and experimental analogues. However, recent advances in analytical techniques and igneous petrology, combined with increased access to samples through collaborations with industry have led to significant improvement of our understanding of their petrogenesis.
This session offers a platform to discuss these new findings and invites contributions from field, experimental and numerical modelling studies that explore the origin, geodynamic setting, igneous and hydrothermal evolution of carbonatites, alkaline magmatic systems and their associated rare metal mineralisations. Studies addressing the effects of mineral saturation, T, P, X, volatiles, fO2, element partitioning, and associated implications for mineralisation and crustal architecture are particularly encouraged.
