Session Description:
Convection has a strong impact on the transport of heat, moisture, momentum and chemical species in the atmosphere, on the Earth’s radiation budget, and, more generally, on the climate. The representation of cumulus convection, radiation and their interactions with large-scale circulations in global models has been an outstanding problem for decades, and is recognized as a main source of uncertainty in climate change predictions. Improving our understanding of clouds and convection at a process level and their representation in large-scale models is among the most important issues in atmospheric sciences. This session aims to explore advances in this important area of research, many aspects of which remain to be fully understood. Contributions from the observational and the modeling front are welcome that investigate all aspects of boundary layer, shallow and deep convective dynamics, their interaction with the land surface and the large-scale environment, and their parameterizations in climate models.
