Session Description:
Miniaturized instruments, new materials and refined operational techniques are now enabling the routine use of tethered balloons and kites for remote sensing and in-situ observations. These “Tethered AeroSystems” are bringing increased local-scale observation opportunities, with a range of potential benefits such as ease of deployment, multiple simultaneous observations, and persistence. Current work also may provide feasible solutions for high altitude flights, as well as planetary observation systems. Discussions of established and contemplated applications are invited, as well as technological highlights of traditional and novel system development and use.
