Local Processes and Global Impact of the Indo-Pacific Maritime Continent II Posters

Session Description:
The Maritime Continent (MC) spans the Indo-Pacific warm pool and supports a major center of tropical atmospheric convection and a unique monsoon system that are central to understanding the variability and predictability of the global coupled climate system. Yet complex variability driven by air-sea-land interactions make observations and simulations of the multi-scale processes of the region challenging. The MC is critical to subseasonal-to-seasonal prediction because of its predictive barrier effect on the eastward propagation of the Madden-Julian Oscillation. The MC regional seas are characterized by strong air-sea heat and freshwater exchanges and tidal mixing that change Pacific water masses as they pass through into the Indian Ocean and beyond. Several recent field campaigns, such as YMC and PISTON, have targeted the MC. This session solicits contributions that use observations, numerical modeling, and theory aimed at advancing understanding of processes and prediction in the MC and their global impact.
